Chapter Eighteen

Brennan

So many thoughts rushed through my mind, and I was so relieved to see the doctor . . . Doctor Martel. But I wasn’t sure why, maybe I was relieved to not be alone here, or maybe it was that someone actually cared enough to check on me.

I looked up at him where he was squatted in front of me with his hand on my knee, giving me support and strength even when I didn’t want it.

“Sean left, he had to go help his uncle, so I had to find somewhere else to stay. I was afraid I’d die if I tried to live on the streets. Dan—the guy that owns the boat—told me I could stay here for a while. I work for him when he needs help.”

He didn’t say a word, didn’t seem to even breathe, as he sat and waited patiently for me to speak. “Who was here when we arrived?” he finally asked.

“A dealer, he . . . I don’t know how he knew I was here. I tried to tell him I had money to pay him, but he didn’t say anything. He busted in the door and, well, I’m not sure what he wanted, if it wasn’t money or drugs.” His eyes held mine in an intense gaze I couldn’t read, as I babbled. “He looked at me like he wanted to kill me, but I don’t understand why. I owe him, but I had the money. I had the money.”

Once again, I was shaking so hard I thought I’d fall apart, but in a second, I found myself being held in arms that for some reason left me feeling safe and protected. A feeling that had become so foreign to me, I had to fight the need in me to push him away.

“I’ll find out what it was about. I’m not sure who the guy is that came here, but I can put some feelers out and see what we come up with,” Dr. Martel said.

“Feelers?” I said, once again pulling away from him. “What are you talking about?”

“I have a friend visiting who’s good at finding things out without anyone knowing what he’s doing. It’s his job; I’ll have him look into it.”

“Why? Why does any of this matter to you?” I was truly curious. In the last few months I’d been living this way, very few of the people I thought of as friends would have cared if I’d been beaten tonight, or even murdered. Which made me once again realize how alone I was in all this.

“There’s more going on here than you realize, which is why I was on my way to talk to you tonight. I need to know what you know about the dealer who came to your apartment the other night. Do you know his name?”

I blinked at his words, my head feeling more and more like it was packed with cotton. “No, I don’t know what his name is. I met him the other night when I bought from him.
